Popular old school Zi Char eating house serving what many regards as one of the best Cantonese-style comfort food in Singapore at reasonable prices and air-conditioned setting. Run by the sons of the now-defunct Sik Wai Sin along the same street at Geylang, Desmond’s Creation’s emphasis is on quality and not quantity of the spread, as the food menu just contains 13 dishes, mainly consisting of meat-based dishes, a handful of vegetables and two specialty soups.

Desmond’s signature dishes focuses on the range of wok-fried dishes such as the crunchy deep-fried, yet succulent Sweet & Sour Pork (from $19), the homely Tofu Prawns (from $19) doused in an umami-laden, savoury egg-drop gravy, the delightful Ginger Chicken (from $19) stir-fried with cubed pickled young ginger, as well as steamed dishes that includes the comforting classic Black Chicken Soup ($25), Steam Pork with Salted Fish (from $19), featuring hand-chopped pork and salted mackeral, and the crowd-favourite Steam Fish Head ($25) that’s steamed with fermented bean sauce and covered in a generous amount of pork lard, shallots and chillies. Go early or be prepared to queue.
